Dear parents and carers,
Welcome back to the second half of the spring term. We hope that you all had a restful break and the children enjoyed some quality time with family and friends. It has been lovely to see the children return to school this week, sharing half-term experiences with their friends and engaging in a range of learning both in and out of the classroom.
Our school ethos focuses this half-term is ‘Self-Belief’. Over the course of this half-term, the children will explore situations, talk about their own experiences and explore the language we can use to develop our own self-belief. This week in our whole school assembly, I shared some situations that may make us feel that we just want to give up, or avoid and how we can overcome these by the things that we tell ourselves or the actions we take. We are looking forward to awarding a child in each class who has demonstrated self-belief, showing resilience and determination when faced with new challenges and experiences.
Tuck Shop – sign up for the next 5 weeks
The Arbor link for the next 5 Friday Tuck Shop sessions is now live on Arbor. Please sign up and make payment of £2.50 before the link closes on Thursday at 6pm – unfortunately, we will not be accepting late sign-ups going forwards, to aid our planning.
After School SATs club and Times Table Club
A big well done to those children who came along to our year 4 Times table club and year 6 SATs club that started this week. We hope that the time spent after school on Monday and Wednesday helped the children to consolidate their learning through practising key skills. If you have not signed your child to these clubs and would like them to come along to the sessions this half-term, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
World Book Day - Thursday 5th March
On Thursday 5th March, the staff and pupils of Horwood will be celebrating World Book Day.
Children can come to school dressed as their favourite book/comic character and there will be prizes for children in each class who are deemed the ‘best dressed’ by the Librarians and our special judges. We will also be taking part in lots of book-based activities throughout the day, including live lessons from some current authors. Mrs Dorrell and the Librarians will hold a special assembly on Friday afternoon to announce the winners and share some of the children’s learning. Book vouchers have been issued early so that the children have time to collect their free book before the supermarkets run out!
For this World Book Day event, Mrs Robinson has amended the menu to include ‘Mr and Mrs Twits Worm Spaghetti Bolognaise’ and Michael Rosens ‘Chocolate Cake’!

Parent Consultations Tuesday 24th and Thursday 26th March
We would like to invite parents from nursery to year 6 for a 10-minute parent consultation on Tuesday 24th or Thursday 26th March from 3:50 – 6pm. This meeting will be an opportunity for your child/ren’s class teacher to share the progress your child/ren has been making this academic year and the targets they have been developing within the classroom. An appointment can be made through our Arbor online system, and will be available to book this coming Wednesday 4th March from 7pm.
Book and Biscuit Afternoon – Wednesday 1st April
We would like to invite parents and carers to our next book and biscuit afternoon on Wednesday 1st April from 2:45-3:25pm. This session will provide an opportunity for the children to share what they have been investigating in their art lessons this term. They would like to showcase some of their final pieces and talk to you about the artists they have been exploring this academic year.
Class 3 Residential to Wildside
A huge thank you to parents of children in class 3 who came along to our residential meeting on Wednesday after school. A letter sharing more information will be sent to parents next week, which will outline deposit payments and final payment dates.
Bring your pet to school Week – Monday 30th to Thursday 2nd April
In our weekly meetings, the school council have discussed their desire to get a school pet. They feel that the children across the school could learn more about that particular animal, and learn the importance about taking care of and looking after animals. As a group, they would like the opportunity for the children to ‘bring a pet to school’ so they can talk about their pet, explaining how they take care of it, what it eats and any other general information. We have spent time discussing how this would look across the week and the risks involved in having animals in schools. In order for this to be successful, we would ask that a parent or family member is available to stay with the pet and support their child sharing their information. Please speak to your child/ren’s class teacher if you would like to support the school council with this event.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend,
Mrs Cook
