Dear parents and carers,
This week our excited group of year 6 children set off for a fantastic week of outdoor activities and fun with friends before the half-term holiday. A huge thank you to Mrs Carter, who spent the beginning of the week in Bude with the children, and Mrs Hopkins, who joined the children at the end of the week to help supervise the activities. It has been so lovely to see all the updates sent across the week and the smiles on all the children’s faces. I particularly enjoyed the group ‘dressing up’ picture with the wide array of costumes on display. I’m sure the children will have lots of exciting stories to share with their family and friends when they are collected from the centre.
Our whole school focus on leadership raised the question about what I do when I get ‘stuck’ on my learning. The children reflected on times when they have found learning difficult and what they have done to overcome this. Some shared that they went straight to ask an adult for help, others said they talked to a friend. Through our discussions we explored what it means to be independent and how we can become independent learners, taking responsibility for our learning and our learning behaviours. I shared a poster with some things the children could do to support themselves to be more independent. The children that we have began working on this week and will continue to develop next half-term. Our poster looks at the 5 Bs:
- BRAIN – do I have information in my brain that can help me?
- BOARD – Is there something displayed on the white board, displays or resources in the classroom that can help me?
- BOOK – Do I have any information in my book that supports me?
- BUDDY – Does my friend know what to do, and can they explain that to me?
- BOSS – I have tried all the things above, and I am still not sure. I am going to ask an adult.
School Improvement Visit
On Wednesday this week, we had a school improvement visit and welcomed Mr Swait (an OFSTED inspector who works for the trust) alongside two of our trustees. Throughout the morning, our visitors observed lessons, looked at children’s learning and spoke to children about their citizenship award. It was lovely for our visitors to see the positive interactions and engagement in learning across the morning from our youngest children solving subtraction number stories to our older children exploring the radius and circumference of a circle. Our school improvement visits enable us a staff to reflect on our learning journey this year, highlighting our strengths as well as the areas that we are continuing to develop across our curriculum. A huge well done to all our children for their continued hard work, focus and concentration across this half-term.
Citizenship Awards
A huge thank you to all those children who have completed their Citizenship awards and returned their project books to school. Over the half-term it would be a great opportunity for children to finalise and complete any outstanding tasks. We have a Citizenship Award assembly taking place on Wednesday 15th July at 2.45pm in Lovacott Gospel Hall - parents are very welcome to join us for this event.
Book and Biscuit Session
We would like to invite parents to another Book and Biscuit session next half-term on Tuesday 16th June from 2:45 -3:30pm, with a focus on our wider curriculum subjects of history, geography and Religion and World Views. We really value the time children spend sharing their learning with their parents and the opportunity for parents to share what the children have been learning in these subjects.
Tuck Shop
If you would like your child to have a Friday afternoon treat from our school tuck shop, please sign up via Arbor. The total cost for the 7-week period will be £3.50 (50p per week). Please can we ask that parents sign up by Thursday 4th June at 18:00.
FRIENDS – Smarties Challenge
Today your child/ren will come home with a tube of the smarties. We would like them to enjoy the smarties and then, by competing chores around the home over the half-term, children can earn 20p’s to fill up their empty tube. We ask that the children’s smarties tubes are returned with their earned pennies to school by Monday 15th June. Thank you all so much for your support for this event.
Telling the time
Across all the classes, the children have been developing their understanding of telling the time using analogue and digital clocks, practising o’clock, half past, quarter past and a quarter to the hour. Over half-term it would be great if the children could practice telling the time at home. Below are some links to online platforms the children can use to practice these skills:
Time Games – Maths Games
Teaching Clock
We hope you all have a fantastic half-term break with family and friends, and we look forward to welcoming all our children back to school on Tuesday 2nd June at 8:50am.
